    Holistic Counselling : Drawing
  • Create something that is the way you want it to be
  • Discover, understand and heal from feelings and beliefs that may be confusing of painful
  • Express something that comes from deep within you
  • Re-connect with lost qualities of imagination and creativity
  • Deal with difficult situations with more confidence and safety, and allows you to have the control in a situation which you may not once have had
  • Find an effective and enjoyable way of doing your work, which is not all hard work
In this type of drawing, the emphasis is on the act of creating something and the acknowledgement and celebration of that creation. It does not require any artistic ability as the emphasis is not on the outcome and it is not necessarily about producing a beautiful picture. Although producing a beautiful picture might happen sometimes, it may be just as important to produce a picture that is disturbing, or ugly, as this may be more helpful in allowing you to get more in touch with the feelings that need to be discovered and dealt with.
Materials that are used are usually crayons, pencils, markers, and large sketch pads.
For many people, drawing freely is something that we may not have done since we were children. Allowing ourselves the experience of doing this once again can evoke childhood memories and feelings that may have been forgotten. These may be positive or negative. For instance, as we start to engage with the process of creativity and imagination in our drawing, we may realise how little we are in touch with these qualities in our life now. This then gives us the opportunity to re-connect with these qualities and bring them into our current life. We may also come face to face with the realisation that we don't allow ourselves to draw or that we do not believe that we can. This can sometimes mirror our belief systems around other aspects of our lives and how we might block or sabotage ourselves. Again, this allows us the opportunity to observe, gain insight and understanding into these feelings and memories allowing them to be worked through and bringing about growth and healing.
Drawing is a safe way of exploring feelings, thoughts and beliefs that are confusing or hidden from our conscious mind. Drawing can provide a means to make them visible and then slowly and safely allow them to come to consciousness for insight and eventually healing and growth. This can bring about a sense of control by creating something the way it is wanted to be, and then bring that experience about in your outer world.
To enter into this type of drawing, is not necessarily a decision process, as in 'what will I draw' or 'I don't know what to draw'.It is more opening to the process and trusting your hands to make the picture you need. It is listening to the part of you that is wise and knows the answers. Letting the art grow in its own way, which is you connected with your inner wisdom, can go on to reveal much.
Your drawings are never judged or even interpreted in a definitive way. The meaning in the drawing may be evident to you straight away, or it may slowly reveal its meaning over time as you revisit or remember the drawing. It is there to be acknowledged and honoured for what it is and for what it will reveal to you.
You can keep your pictures as a record or you can symbolically destroy, burn, tear them up etc., if this is a more powerful way of dealing with the content. You may also like to place your picture somewhere significant for the client, as a reminder of the work.
